In short

  • Our pick for design is Upper House Hong Kong: André Fu conceived the house in 2009 in a converted apartment building above Pacific Place, Thomas Heatherwick's 'Stone Curtains' frame the entrance, and sculptures and artwork mark the way up.
  • Rosewood Hong Kong pairs architecture by Kohn Pedersen Fox and interiors by Tony Chi with the city's only 3 Michelin Keys, and its Butterfly Room shows Damien Hirst butterfly art.
  • For architecture with a past, The Murray in Central is Foster + Partners' conversion of the 1969 Murray Building, a former government office tower facing Hong Kong Park.

Why Upper House Hong Kong is our pick for design

André Fu conceived Upper House in 2009, converting The Atrium serviced apartments above Pacific Place into a house of 117 rooms; the Michelin inspector describes a 'crisp, modernist style'. The visit starts at the entrance, framed by Thomas Heatherwick's 'Stone Curtains' façade, and goes up, from the arrival on level 4 and The Lawn garden on level 6 to Salisterra and the bars on level 49, through spaces the hotel describes as 'dotted with smooth monolithic sculptures and artwork'. Fu came back to design Salisterra, which took over the former Café Gray Deluxe in 2021, and the André Fu Suite, added the same year.

Its limit on this criterion: the building itself is not the work. The house fills floors 38 to 49 of the tower that also holds the JW Marriott, above a shopping mall, and the hotel's own page credits one work by name, Heatherwick's façade, without naming the artists of the sculptures. The interiors date from 2009, and no full renovation has been published since.

Who designed which hotel

On Hong Kong Island, Foster + Partners converted the 1969 Murray Building into The Murray. Joyce Wang redesigned Mandarin Oriental The Landmark, reopened on 1 June 2026, and Michelin credits its new façade to Neri&Hu. Mandarin Oriental, opened in 1963 to a design by John Howarth of Leigh & Orange, is being renovated by Hubert de Malherbe, Jeffrey Wilkes and Thierry Lemaire, with completion expected in the fourth quarter of 2026; Sir Terence Conran did the interiors of its Mandarin Grill + Bar. Tara Bernerd designed The Hari, Tristan Auer the 2023 suites of Island Shangri-La, and Rocco Design the Four Seasons building, with rooms by Remedios Studio and the ARGO bar by AB Concept.

In Kowloon, Kohn Pedersen Fox is the architect of Rosewood and K11 ARTUS at Victoria Dockside, and of The Ritz-Carlton's ICC tower with Wong & Ouyang. Tony Chi did the interiors of Rosewood; André Fu those of K11 ARTUS, whose three penthouses are by Joyce Wang, nemaworkshop and Fiona Barratt-Campbell. Chi Wing Lo, a Hong Kong-born designer, did the interiors of Regent, reopened in 2023: it is his first hotel. The Peninsula's 1928 building is listed among Hong Kong's Grade I historic buildings, and Philippe Starck designed Felix, its rooftop restaurant and bar.

Where to see art in Hong Kong

At Upper House, Heatherwick's 'Stone Curtains' frame the entrance. At Rosewood, The Butterfly Room, where afternoon tea is served, shows Damien Hirst butterfly art. In Central, Mandarin Oriental The Landmark is within walking distance of Tai Kwun, the former Central Police Station compound, reopened in 2018 as a heritage and arts site, and of PMQ, the former Police Married Quarters, a creative hub since 2014.

On the Kowloon side, the West Kowloon Cultural District faces the harbour with M+, the museum of visual culture by Herzog & de Meuron with Farrells, opened in November 2021, and the Hong Kong Palace Museum by Rocco Design Architects, opened on 3 July 2022. The Ritz-Carlton, in the ICC, is the hotel of this ranking closest to both, about 300 m from M+ in a straight line.
