Upper House Shanghai

Upper House Shanghai is the hotel that opened in 2018 as The Middle House, the fourth house of Swire Hotels. On 15 October 2025 Swire Hotels brought its houses under a single brand, Upper House, and the Shanghai house took the name. The address, the buildings and the teams are the same: No. 366 Shi Men Yi Road, in the HKRI Taikoo Hui development on West Nanjing Road, Jing'an.

The house is two buildings around a bamboo garden. The first holds the 111 hotel rooms and the top-floor Penthouse; the second, now called Upper House Shanghai Apartments, holds 102 serviced apartments and the Sui Tang Li restaurant. The Michelin Guide gave it one Key in its first mainland China selection in 2025 and again in 2026, and Forbes Travel Guide rates it Four-Star for 2026.

The hotel rooms are studios, named after their size: Studio 50, Studio 60, Studio 70 and Studio 90, plus a Landmark Studio of 60 m² facing the Jing'an skyline and two terrace versions. The Penthouse on the top floor measures 660 m², with two bedrooms and terraces, and can host private dinners.

The apartments run from 55 to 110 m², all with a full kitchen, and the 110 m² apartments have two bedrooms. Every category takes one extra child. Piero Lissoni designed the interiors with Chinese porcelain, ceramics, bamboo and lacquer next to Italian furniture and Chinese antiques.

Café Gray Deluxe, on Level 3, serves modern European cooking with Asian touches from breakfast to dinner, with weekend brunch and afternoon tea; its terrace over Nanjing West Road is, in the hotel's words, one of the city's largest outdoor terraces. The lounge stays open until 01:00.

Sui Tang Li, on the second floor of the apartments building, is a contemporary Shanghai bistro known for regional dim sum. It is in the 2026 Michelin selection without a star, and the hotel lists seven years of Black Pearl One Diamond for it. Sui Tang Shang, upstairs, is a room for private events.

The 25 m indoor pool is heated and open daily from 06:00 to 23:00. Next to it are the Mi Xun Spa and a gym. There is no outdoor pool. Among the 16 hotels of our Shanghai ranking, only Amanyangyun, 30 km south-west of the centre, publishes one.

The house sits in Dazhongli, just off West Nanjing Road, the shopping street of Jing'an. West Nanjing Road station, where lines 2, 12 and 13 meet, is a walk away, which puts People's Square one stop east and the Bund about 3 km away in a straight line.

Hongqiao airport (SHA) is 12 km away in a straight line, Pudong airport (PVG) 34 km. For a meeting in Lujiazui, line 2 runs under the river from West Nanjing Road.

Check-in is at 14:00 and check-out at noon. Pets are not allowed. Forbes Travel Guide notes that the house fills up during Shanghai Fashion Week, Design Shanghai and West Bund Art & Design, and that about 70% of its guests travel for business: book early for those weeks.
