Where to stay
The best luxury hotels in Jing'an, Shanghai, in 2026
Four hotels in Jing'an hold a 2026 Michelin Key. Our pick is Upper House Shanghai: studios from 50 m², 102 apartments and three metro lines on foot.

By Mathias C.Editor of the guide
In short
- Four hotels in Jing'an hold a Michelin Key in the 2026 selection: Upper House Shanghai, Bvlgari Hotel Shanghai, The PuLi Shanghai and The Sukhothai Shanghai; Bvlgari holds two, the other three hold one each.
- Our pick is Upper House Shanghai, the former Middle House at No. 366 Shi Men Yi Road: studios of 50 to 90 m², 102 serviced apartments of 55 to 110 m² with kitchens, a 25 m heated indoor pool open 06:00 to 23:00, and West Nanjing Road station, where metro lines 2, 12 and 13 meet, a walk from the door.
- No hotel in Jing'an looks at the Huangpu: the Bund is 2.7 km from Upper House Shanghai in a straight line and 4.3 km from The PuLi, so a river view means booking in Huangpu or Pudong instead.
Four hotels in Jing'an hold a Michelin Key in the 2026 selection: Bvlgari Hotel Shanghai with two, and Upper House Shanghai, The PuLi Shanghai and The Sukhothai Shanghai with one each. Our pick of the four is Upper House Shanghai, the Swire Hotels house that traded as The Middle House until October 2025, with studios of 50 to 90 m², 102 serviced apartments and West Nanjing Road station, where metro lines 2, 12 and 13 meet, a walk from the door.
The district suits a traveller who plans to use the metro rather than taxis, and who would rather have shops and parks under the window than the Huangpu. Upper House Shanghai is also the only house here with serviced apartments, which decides most stays longer than a fortnight. Below: a summary table, each of the four houses in turn, the parts of Jing'an and what each one is good for, distances and metro lines, the district's other luxury hotels, and the booking mistakes that cost people a good stay.
The four Michelin Key hotels of Jing'an at a glance
| Hotel | Rooms and entry size | 2026 distinctions |
|---|---|---|
| Upper House Shanghai | 213 keys, studios from 50 m² | 1 Michelin Key, Forbes Four-Star |
| Bvlgari Hotel Shanghai | 82 rooms, 19 suites | 2 Michelin Keys, Forbes Five-Star |
| The PuLi Shanghai | 229 rooms, from 45 m² | 1 Michelin Key, Forbes Four-Star |
| The Sukhothai Shanghai | 201 rooms, from 45 m² | 1 Michelin Key, Forbes Four-Star |
Keys read on each hotel's Michelin Guide page, star ratings on each hotel's Forbes Travel Guide page, room counts and sizes on the hotels' own sites, all checked on 30 October 2026.
Criteria used on this page:
- a Michelin Key in the 2026 selection, or a Forbes Travel Guide star rating for 2026;
- the size of the entry room as the hotel publishes it;
- what the building holds: pool, spa, restaurants and their Michelin status;
- the walk to a metro station, and which lines that station carries.
Upper House Shanghai, our pick
The house opened in May 2018 as The Middle House, according to the Swire Properties release, and took the Upper House name when Swire Hotels launched its single brand on 15 October 2025. The address did not move: No. 366 Shi Men Yi Road, inside HKRI Taikoo Hui, the mixed-use development built on the historic Dazhongli site.
Piero Lissoni designed two buildings around a bamboo garden. The first holds 111 studios and, on the top floor, a 660 m² two-bedroom Penthouse with terraces. The second, now called Upper House Shanghai Apartments, holds 102 serviced apartments of 55 to 110 m², each with a full kitchen, which makes this the only house in Jing'an set up for a stay measured in weeks. Studios come as Studio 50, Studio 60, Studio 70 and Studio 90, plus a 60 m² Landmark Studio facing the Jing'an skyline and two versions with a terrace, on the hotel's rooms page.
Café Gray Deluxe sits on Level 3, and its terrace over Nanjing West Road is, in the hotel's own words, one of the city's largest; its page gives the lounge as open daily from 06:30 to 01:00 (checked on 30 October 2026). Sui Tang Li, on the second floor of the apartments building, serves Shanghai cooking and regional dim sum, and is Michelin Selected in the 2026 restaurant guide, without a star.
The 25 m indoor pool is heated and open daily from 06:00 to 23:00, on the wellness page, next to the Mi Xun Spa and a gym open around the clock. Check-in is at 14:00 and check-out at noon, and the Michelin Guide lists an extra bed at CNY 583 per person per night in Studio 70 and Studio 90, and no pets (all checked on 30 October 2026).
Its distinctions for 2026, as the hotel lists them: a Michelin Key announced on 18 September 2026, after a first Key in the 2025 selection; a Forbes Travel Guide Four-Star rating dated 13 February 2026; and, on 7 October 2026, the Condé Nast Traveler Readers' Choice Awards, No. 1 in Shanghai on the US list and No. 9 in China on the UK list.
Its limits are real. No room looks at the river or the Bund, since the view is the Jing'an skyline, the pool is indoor only, and no restaurant in the building holds a Michelin star. Forbes Travel Guide also notes that about 70% of guests travel for business and that the house fills during Shanghai Fashion Week, Design Shanghai and West Bund Art & Design.
Book it if you want a large room near three metro lines, or a kitchen for a long stay. Our full review of Upper House Shanghai lists every category, and the hotel takes direct bookings on upperhouse.com.
Bvlgari Hotel Shanghai, the starred tables
Bvlgari is the strongest table in the district and the only two-Key hotel in it. It occupies the top floors of a purpose-built tower on Lane 108 North Shanxi Road, in the Suhe Creek redevelopment, plus the restored 1916 Shanghai General Chamber of Commerce building next door, which Bvlgari spent eight years renovating. Antonio Citterio Patricia Viel designed it, as they did the brand's houses in Milan and London.
The Michelin Guide counts 82 rooms; Forbes Travel Guide adds 19 suites, the largest of them the Bvlgari Suite at 4,306 sq ft, about 400 m². Bao Li Xuan, Cantonese, on the third floor of the Chamber of Commerce building, holds two Michelin stars for 2026; Il Ristorante - Niko Romito, on the 47th floor, holds one. The Bulgari Bar is at the top of the tower, La Terrazza is a rooftop lounge with cabanas, and a Whisky Bar sits in the historic building. There is a 25 m indoor pool in the underground spa. Check-in is at 15:00.
Its limits: Forbes states plainly that not every room faces the Bund and Pudong, so a river view has to be requested; Michelin lists no parking on site; and we could not confirm the size of its entry room or its nearest metro station. In a straight line it stands 1.1 km from the Bund and 2.3 km from Upper House Shanghai, closer to Huangpu than to the rest of Jing'an.
Book it if dinner decides the trip, or if you want the Bund on foot without paying for a riverfront address.
The PuLi Shanghai, the park view
The PuLi opened in 2009 at 1 ChangDe Road, beside Jing'an Park, and calls itself an urban resort. Michelin counts a 26-storey tower and 229 rooms, 36 of them suites, starting with the 45 m² Deluxe Room; rooms facing the park begin with the 47 m² Grand Room, and the largest, the Jing'An Suite, measures 130 m² with two master bedrooms, on the hotel's rooms page.
The 25 m heated indoor infinity pool on Level 3 is lined with windows onto the park's trees, which is the single thing no other hotel in the district offers. The PuLi Spa, a hot tub, a sauna and a steam room are on the same floor. PHÉNIX, a French brasserie on Level 2, looks over the park. The Long Bar serves afternoon tea in the lobby. Two venues are announced and not yet open: a grill and WAKYO, an eight-seat kappo omakase counter.
Access is the hotel's other argument. Its directions page describes a covered indoor route to Jing'an Temple station, where lines 2, 7 and 14 meet, through the neighbouring Reel department store, which is worth something in July or in the rain. The same page prices airport transfers at CNY 1,050 for Pudong and CNY 850 for Hongqiao, plus 9% VAT, with one leg free for guests in a Deluxe Suite or above staying two nights or more (checked on 30 October 2026).
Its limits: PHÉNIX held a Michelin star until the 2025 guide and lost it in 2026, although the hotel site still describes it as starred. And a full renovation announced in November 2025 by TTG Asia is being run in phases while the hotel stays open; we found no published confirmation that it has finished.
Book it if you want a window onto Jing'an Park and the shortest covered walk to a metro station in the district. Our Upper House Shanghai vs The PuLi comparison weighs the two side by side.
The Sukhothai Shanghai, design and artworks
The Sukhothai opened in April 2018 at 380 Weihai Road, a few streets from Upper House and, like it, attached to the HKRI Taikoo Hui block, with direct access to the mall. Neri&Hu designed the interiors. The hotel's own account counts 170 guest rooms and 31 residential-style suites, from the 45 m² Executive Room to the 172 m² Signature Suite, and more than 30 commissioned artworks, two of them interactive installations by teamLab.
La Scala serves Italian cooking, URBAN Café Thai, and Beans & Grapes works as a deli. URBAN Lounge keeps a gin library that Forbes counts at 350 bottles, and The ZUK Bar is a garden terrace. The 25 m indoor pool is heated, with a sauna and a steam room, and the spa is called The Retreat. The hotel holds LEED certification and lists West Nanjing Road station, lines 2, 12 and 13, as within immediate walking distance.
Its limits: no restaurant here holds a Michelin star either, and Forbes Travel Guide notes that little is set up specifically for children, suggesting the 55 m² Studio Room to families who come anyway.
Book it if contemporary design and art are the reason you are travelling. It also appears in our ranking of the design hotels of Shanghai.
Which part of Jing'an to book
Jing'an covers 37.37 km² and absorbed the former Zhabei district on 4 November 2015, according to Wikipedia, which means an address labelled Jing'an can sit anywhere from West Nanjing Road to the far side of Shanghai Railway Station. The luxury hotels group into three places:
- West Nanjing Road and Dazhongli. Upper House Shanghai and The Sukhothai Shanghai, 0.3 km apart in a straight line, both on the HKRI Taikoo Hui block. The development runs to about 3.46 million sq ft of mall, offices, hotel and apartments, and is reached on foot from West Nanjing Road station.
- Jing'an Temple. The PuLi, 0.2 km from the temple and facing Jing'an Park, which opened in 1954 on the site of the Bubbling Well Road Cemetery and keeps the old lane of plane trees down its middle.
- Suzhou Creek. Bvlgari, 3.9 km north-east of the temple and 1.1 km from the Bund, closer in feel to Huangpu than to the rest of the district.
The northern half of Jing'an, the former Zhabei around Shanghai Railway Station, holds no hotel in our guide.
Distances and metro lines
| In a straight line | From Upper House | From The PuLi |
|---|---|---|
| Jing'an Temple | 1.5 km | 0.2 km |
| People's Square | 1.6 km | 3.0 km |
| Xintiandi | 1.5 km | 2.5 km |
| The Bund | 2.7 km | 4.3 km |
| Shanghai Tower, Lujiazui | 4.1 km | 5.6 km |
| Hongqiao airport (SHA) | 12.2 km | 10.6 km |
| Pudong airport (PVG) | 34.5 km | 35.6 km |
Straight-line distances calculated from the coordinates of each hotel and landmark. Road and metro journeys are longer.
Two stations serve the four hotels. West Nanjing Road carries lines 2, 12 and 13; Jing'an Temple carries lines 2, 7 and 14. Line 2 does most of the work for a visitor: it runs east through People's Square and East Nanjing Road, under the river to Lujiazui, and out to Pudong Airport, and west to Hongqiao Airport Terminal 2, on a single line. Some eastbound trains terminate at Guanglan Road rather than the airport, so check the destination on the platform board.
The other luxury hotels of Jing'an
Three more hotels in the district are worth knowing about, even though our Shanghai ranking does not cover them.
- The Portman Ritz-Carlton, Shanghai, 1376 Nanjing Xi Road, inside the Shanghai Centre complex. Michelin counts 593 rooms, an indoor pool and a seasonal outdoor pool, and lists no Key; Forbes rates it Four-Star for 2026. It is the largest luxury hotel in the district and the only one here with an outdoor pool.
- Alila Shanghai, No. 500 Weihai Road, 186 rooms in a tower that was a Four Seasons before its conversion, with a heated pool and spa on the fifth floor, per Michelin. No Key; Forbes lists it as Recommended for 2026.
- The St. Regis Shanghai Jingan, listed as Recommended on the Forbes Travel Guide page for Shanghai for 2026.
Mistakes to avoid
- Booking "Jing'an" without checking the street. The district stretches well north of Suzhou Creek. The four hotels above are all in its southern part, between West Nanjing Road and the temple.
- Expecting a river view. None of the four faces the Huangpu. Upper House looks at the Jing'an skyline, The PuLi at the park, and at Bvlgari only some rooms see Suzhou Creek, the Bund and Pudong, and they have to be asked for.
- Searching for The Middle House. It has been Upper House Shanghai since 15 October 2025, and the Michelin page address still reads the-middle-house. We covered what changed with the name separately.
- Counting on a star at PHÉNIX. The restaurant lost it in the 2026 guide, whatever the hotel site still says.
- Leaving an event week to chance. Upper House fills during Shanghai Fashion Week, Design Shanghai and West Bund Art & Design, and the other three sit in the same few blocks.
Who should stay somewhere else
A visitor who wants the river in the window belongs on the Bund or in Lujiazui. Shikumen lane houses are in Xuhui and around Xintiandi. Anyone who needs an outdoor pool has one option here, The Portman Ritz-Carlton, and otherwise has to leave the city centre. Our ranking of the 16 best luxury hotels in Shanghai covers those neighbourhoods against the same criteria.
Frequently asked questions
Which hotels in Jing'an have a Michelin Key?
Four, in the 2026 selection of the Michelin Guide: Bvlgari Hotel Shanghai with two Keys, and Upper House Shanghai, The PuLi Shanghai and The Sukhothai Shanghai with one each. The Portman Ritz-Carlton and Alila Shanghai are listed by the Michelin Guide as Jing'an hotels but carry no Key.
Is Upper House Shanghai a good base in Jing'an?
It is our pick in the district. Its studios run from 50 to 90 m², above the 45 m² entry rooms of The PuLi and The Sukhothai, and its second building holds 102 serviced apartments of 55 to 110 m² with full kitchens. West Nanjing Road station, where lines 2, 12 and 13 meet, is reached on foot through the HKRI Taikoo Hui development. It has no river view and no Michelin-starred restaurant.
Which Jing'an hotel has the best restaurants?
Bvlgari Hotel Shanghai, on Suzhou Creek. Bao Li Xuan, on the third floor of the restored 1916 Chamber of Commerce building, holds two Michelin stars for 2026, and Il Ristorante - Niko Romito, on the 47th floor of the tower, holds one. No other hotel in Jing'an has a starred restaurant: Sui Tang Li at Upper House is Michelin Selected, and PHÉNIX at The PuLi lost its star in the 2026 guide.
Is Jing'an better than the Bund for a first trip to Shanghai?
Jing'an gives you more metro and less water. From Upper House Shanghai, People's Square is 1.6 km away in a straight line and the Bund 2.7 km, and line 2 runs from West Nanjing Road to both airports without a change. The Bund gives you the river view that no Jing'an hotel can offer.
Which metro stations serve the luxury hotels of Jing'an?
Two. West Nanjing Road station carries lines 2, 12 and 13 and is walkable from Upper House Shanghai and The Sukhothai Shanghai, both on the HKRI Taikoo Hui block. Jing'an Temple station carries lines 2, 7 and 14, and The PuLi publishes a covered indoor route to it through the neighbouring Reel department store. For Bvlgari Hotel Shanghai, we could not confirm the nearest station.
Can you stay in Jing'an for a month?
Upper House Shanghai is the house in the district built for it: 102 serviced apartments of 55 to 110 m², each with a full kitchen, in the building also holding the Sui Tang Li restaurant. The 110 m² apartments have two bedrooms and sleep four adults plus one child.
